What is GRA Certification? Moissanite Grading Explained

A jeweler's explanation of GRA (Gemological Research Association) certification, what it verifies, and how to read your moissanite report.

What is GRA?

GRA stands for Gemological Research Association — an independent laboratory specializing in the grading and certification of lab-grown moissanite. GRA reports are the most widely recognized authentication standard for moissanite jewelry sold worldwide.

What does a GRA certificate verify?

A GRA report documents the verified optical and physical properties of a moissanite stone, including:

  • Stone identity — confirmed as lab-grown moissanite (silicon carbide, SiC)
  • Color grade — graded D to Z on the GIA color scale
  • Clarity grade — graded FL, IF, VVS1, VVS2, VS1, VS2, SI1, SI2
  • Cut shape — round brilliant, princess, pear, oval, cushion, emerald, etc.
  • Carat weight — measured to the nearest 0.01 carat
  • Millimeter dimensions — length × width × depth
  • Girdle inscription — the unique report number laser-engraved on the stone's girdle

How is GRA different from GIA?

GIA (Gemological Institute of America) is the world's leading authority on natural diamond grading. GRA uses the same grading standards (color D-Z, clarity FL to I3) but specializes in lab-grown moissanite, which GIA does not grade. The two organizations are complementary — GIA for diamonds, GRA for moissanite.

How can I verify my GRA certificate?

  1. Locate the report number on your printed certificate (usually starts with the letters "GRA-" or "G-")
  2. Find the laser inscription on the stone's girdle (the thin band where the top and bottom of the stone meet) — it's visible under 10x magnification (a jeweler's loupe)
  3. Match the inscription to the report number — they should be identical
  4. Scan the QR code on the certificate, or enter the report number on the GRA website to view the digital record

If all four match, your moissanite is authentic and the certificate is genuine.

What grades does Smonu use?

Where is the GRA certificate stored?

Can a GRA report be faked?

Counterfeit certificates exist, which is why we recommend the four-step verification above. Two strong authenticity signals:

  • The girdle inscription must match the report number on the printed certificate
  • The QR code on the certificate should resolve to a record on the official GRA website

If either is missing or mismatched, the stone or report is not authentic.

Why does certification matter?

For a few practical reasons:

  • Resale and insurance — appraisers require documentation of stone identity and grade
  • Confidence — you know exactly what you're wearing, not a guess
  • Comparison shopping — D VVS1 moissanite is a defined product, so prices are directly comparable across vendors
